Refine Technology aims to provide the best in class small and large scale cell retention device and utilize the novel benefits from the patented ATF™ System to dramatically improve biomanufacturing processes.
Refine Technology was founded in 1999 with a vision to bring to the biopharmaceutical market cell separation systems that allow for increased productivity of cell derived biopharmaceuticals. Refine soon introduced its ATF System which is now being used in the development and manufacturing facilities of many biological and pharmaceutical companies, and in the commercial manufacture of two protein based drugs.
The initial focus and success has been on upstream intensification, from cell bank through to ultra high cell concentration harvests, and forms the basis of a new facility design approach often called "Factory of the Future".
The benefits of the ATF System are now being applied to an increasing range of downstream applications, from hybrid production processes and extended clarification (primary recovery), to standard UF/DF applications, and the use of precipitation as a tool for both protein purification and HCP/DNA removal.
The expanding area of stem cell bioprocessing is also profiting through the use of the ATF System with a patent pending screen filter. Originally used for adherent cells and vaccine processes, the similar problems facing larger scale stem cell production make the ATF System an ideal solution for manufacturing these new medicines.
The company, based in New Jersey, USA, about half an hour from Newark Airport, has worldwide sales and technical support through a network of distributors.

Jerry Shevitz
President and Chief Research Officer
Jerry Shevitz, Ph.D. received his degree from CUNY, New York , N.Y., subsequently focusing on cell biology and Immunology.
Jerry has an extensive background in the biomanufacturing industry, from small scale research to large scale process development,
with companies involved in drug development and also with equipment suppliers. Jerry is a productive inventor always looking for
improved solutions and new approaches. He is President of the company and heads the Refine research department.
John Bonham-Carter
Vice President, Sales & Business Development
The first business John founded was a free-ads newspaper in the south of France, called Annonces Vertes. After a period with a
satirical political magazine in London, the Insider, he moved into the family business of fermenter manufacturing (his
grandmother started LH Engineering Ltd many years ago). John joined the start-up company Adaptive Biosystems as Sales
Director and also managed the R&D department – winning a government award for introducing AI into fermentation prediction
and control. He worked with facility design & build company W H Promation, before founding Magellan Instruments and it's
Scandinavian subsidiary. John co-organised ESACT 2005 and ESACT 2009.
